EMILY'S STORY
In mid-March, Emily was diagnosed with a rare form of uterine cancer, leiomyosarcoma, which was discovered after having a hysterectomy for what they thought was a benign fibroid.
The great news is that there is no indication via CT and PET scans that the cancer has spread. Because they only check for the most common forms of cancer during surgery, the cancer was not detected during the hysterectomy, and the surgeon didn't perform any lymph node biopsies. Because of this, the staging is based only on CT scans, and coupled with the large size of the tumor, Emily was placed in a high enough risk category for the sarcoma specialist at Mayo to recommend chemotherapy.
Emily is now through her second round of chemotherapy. Each round requires her to be hospitalized at Mayo for several days. You can follow her medical updates at her CaringBridge site HERE.
